Nov. 23: Coon Creek Cabin

The cold wind made it hard to get up in the morning and hard to do anything in the way of packing up and filtering water. Even with a coat on, I was trying my best to avoid the shade. As such, in spite of my best intentions, I didn’t make it onto the trail until 9:30.

Nov. 22: A Late Exit

Despite my late night, I still managed to at least get up at an early enough hour that I thought I could get to the trail by noon. I cut the oversize plastic covers off the aglets of my new laces, installed them on my boots, tied the excess lace around my ankles, and went out for some breakfast.

Nov. 21: Big Bear Lake

For various reasons, it was around 10am by the time I started hiking. The trail was just a slow climb up the side of Delamar Mountain. I stopped for a snack at Delamar Mountain Rd, where a truck was parked and people were coming by looking for the trail.

Nov. 20: Out of Deep Creek

Although I got a good early start on getting up and was happy to see my shorts were dry, after collecting and filtering water and filming a long video documenting the hot springs and packing up, it was 9am before I started hiking.

Nov. 19: Onsen Visit Episode

I managed to get packed up enough to exit my tent shortly after the sun started peeking over the mountains, and was pretty much ready to go by the time the sunlight actually reached my campsite.

Nov. 18: Breakfast at McDonald’s

As might be guessed from the title of this post, the most exciting thing that happened was stopping at McDonald’s for breakfast.

Nov. 17: Wrightwood to Swarthout Canyon

I got started very early, taking a La Croix from the minibar to undry my throat, then making some coffee.

I walked to the convenience store around the corner for some fast breakfast. Then, after showering and packing up, I walked back again to buy a couple of limes and some candy to motivate me up the hill.

Nov. 14-16: A Weekend In Pasadena

Nov. 14:

Obviously I didn’t prefer to spend three straight nights in Pasadena and two straight zero days off the trail, but I didn’t mind taking one day off if just for the sake of clean clothing. After all, I had been a long way and a lot of not clean places since the last time I had done laundry nearly a week before. So, following an early trip down the street to the grocery store, I booked another night in the motel.

Nov. 13: Rescued from a Dead End

Thanks to a lack of information, I made a poor decision this day.

A chill wind blew across the parking lot as I got ready to hike again. It was chilly enough to lose feeling in my fingers as I rolled up my mattress on the picnic table. I did the later parts of packing up, including removing my extra layers, in the foyer of the privy for the added wind protection.

Nov. 12: Over the Mt. Gleason Ridge

I started decamping at sunrise, but before I left, Todd the caretaker came out to chat. He informed me that dispersed camping (as I had definitely done the night previous) was currently banned, and the next place that I could legally camp was Mill Creek. So that became my destination for the day.
