Oct. 28: Windigo Pass

I was sworn by internet friend to get sunrise pictures from my cliffside campsite, so getting up before the sun was a priority for the day. The sunrise pictures turned out nice enough, but I think sunset looked better.

The day’s hike didn’t have too much to comment on. The trail followed the ridge over a mountain then down to Windigo Pass, where lay a water cache. A couple hundred gallons of water in 5 gallon drums. I filled up my bag then climbed up onto the next ridge. There wasn’t much to see from the ridge even when there were views. Eventually, late in the afternoon, I could see the shape of Miller Lake. A few minutes later, I stopped at the junction that would lead down to it. There were a lot of flat, sandy sites there to pitch a tent. Also, my bowels could not be held any longer. They made the decision!

It turned out to be a very cold spot to sleep compared to the exposed but sunlit cliff of the previous night. I put on an extra layer before bed, as I would continue to do every night out for the next week and a half.

Total distance: 18 miles
